11. Carl Asaba (1998-2001)

It is a great pity that Carl Asaba should have left the Gills under a cloud, and that some supporters have decided he is now public enemy number one.  For there is little doubt that Asaba is one of the most exhilarating players ever to pull on a Gills shirt.  Powerful and pacy, Asaba, together with Robert Taylor, formed the most explosive forward pairing ever to grace a Gillingham team.  And with Taylor departed, Carl proved that he could still do the business.

Sadly, injury deprived us of his services for long periods in the middle of his Gills career, and one can only wonder at what his goal tally may have been if he’d stayed fit more often.

Some may choose to tar him with the Judas brush, but to many others he will always be King Carl.
