19. Guy Butters (1996-2001)

Signed in the autumn of 1996 from Portsmouth, Guy Butters instantly solidified a defence that was struggling to stop Division 2 from pulverising them. He’s been there ever since, adding a composed determination to the eggers. A better passer than Barry Ashby, a better attacker than Adrian Pennock, and less error-prone than both of them, you couldn’t exactly say that Guy had a cultured left foot, but it can certainly recite the opening stanza of The Waste Land. He may talk as if his brain is made of peanut butter, but Guy, scorer of our first-ever goal in Division 1 and our best defender since Colin Greenall, would bite through granite for the Gills cause.
