17. Iffy Onuora (1996-98 & 1999-2001)

Let’s face it, there’s not a lot left to say about Iffy. He’s twice won over the Gills support through intelligent use of his talent and brute force. He shouldn’t have had to win us over a second time (only the weight of expectation in living up to Bob Taylor worked against him on his return) as his first swashbuckling season at Priestfield rivalled Taylor at his best as he crashed them in from all angles and distances. He doesn’t rattle defenders with powering runs and blistering drives any more, but his effectiveness is undisputed at the higher level and the side has been poorer without him. Life supporting Gillingham would be poorer without him. Despite all the spectacular goals he’s notched (and he’s averaged more than 1 in every 3 appearances), my favourite Iffy moment remains hurling the ball at a linesman at Turf Moor when disputing a throw-in – probably the most deserved sending off I’ve ever seen but what a way to go.

139 apps, 49 goals
