Portsmouth were far from popular visitors to Priestfield having bored the pants off everyone the previous season with their negative tactics (and the last minute winner didn’t go down too well either). The Gills, meanwhile, were in the middle of a purple patch which had propelled them up the table, so the Priestfield crowd were none too pleased to see their side trailing 2-1 as the game entered it’s final third.
Then came the turning point, as Pompey`s Steve Aizlewood was sent off. For the last half hour the Gills simply swarmed all over the visiting defence. Two goals from Dean White, in the greatest goalscoring form of his career, one from Ken Price and a Richie Bowman penalty saw the Gills march to a 4-2 win, their fourth in a run of six consecutive victories which would see them top of the table at the end of October.
